Back to Kalaysis: navigating the nexus

Back to Kalaysis continues Generation Climate Europe’s journey of bringing major scientific assessments to life through storytelling. Inspired by the 2024 IPBES Nexus Assessment, this fictional narrative explores how biodiversity, water, food, health and climate are fundamentally interconnected. Together, these five systems form a “nexus”, meaning that decisions in one area can create far-reaching consequences across the others. Protecting biodiversity, for example, also supports food security, clean water, climate resilience and human well-being.

The IPBES Nexus Assessment presents six possible future scenarios that illustrate how different policy choices and societal priorities could shape our world. Drawing on these scenarios, Back to Kalaysis imagines how these futures might unfold in practice through an engaging and accessible story. By translating complex science into a compelling narrative, this project encourages young people to explore systems thinking, understand the trade-offs behind decision-making, and reflect on the actions needed to build a more sustainable and resilient future.
