The road to COP28: unravelling the challenges of implementing the loss & damages fund
At COP27, negotiators established the Loss & Damage Fund – a decision that has been dubbed one of the most significant breakthroughs in 30 years of climate negotiations. Countries have pledged to set up a dedicated fund that supports less economically developed nations to address the negative consequences of climate change like droughts, desertification, or island sinking. However, many questions remain unresolved in the operationalisation of the financing mechanism, including how much money will be needed and who should pay for it. Therefore, we have met with two young Loss & Damage negotiators to explore what the most significant issues in the upcoming negotiations may be, and how young people can effectively channel their voices into demanding an ambitious, just and equitable financing mechanism.
