Project Lead on Energy Poverty

About the Role

Generation Climate Europe is seeking a Project Lead on Energy Poverty to join our team in advocating for the rights of youth affected by energy poverty in the European Union. The EU has experienced an energy crisis sparked by Russia since mid-2021, and the War in Ukraine has only worsened the situation. The rising prices are making an alarming bell all across the EU for the rise of energy poverty, which is the situation in which households are not able to pay for their energy needs. Before Covid, some academic research and statistical data already suggested that energy poverty affects young people more than other social groups, especially students and people living in shared accommodation. At the same time, energy poverty among youth remains an underrepresented topic in European politics. Our team is currently working on a report on energy poverty among young people.

Tasks

  • Co-leading a team of 4-5 volunteers to develop advocacy strategies and campaigns to raise awareness about the impact of energy poverty on youth in Europe.
  • Overseeing day-to-day work of volunteers (attending bi-weekly meetings, preparing agenda and taking minutes, etc)
  • Collaborating with relevant stakeholders such as the European Youth Energy Network, the European Alliance for a Just Transition and the Right to Energy Coalition, and other organizations across Europe to amplify the voices of youth affected by energy poverty.
  • Monitoring and analyzing the political debate on energy poverty in the EU
  • Monitoring the implementation of the Social Climate Fund of the EU and tracking the disbursement of funds to combat energy poverty
  • Participating in meetings with EU policymakers (European Parliament, Commission, Council, etc.) to advocate for the inclusion of youth voices in the policy-making process and ensure that EU policy addresses the needs of young people affected by energy poverty.

About You

  • Passionate about climate and environmental issues and committed to making a positive impact on the world
  • Available to work remotely for around 3-4 hours a week (flexible)
  • High proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms) and/or Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Basic knowledge of EU policy-making and a willingness to learn more about this field
  • Good organizational skills and project management
  • Curious, proactive, and interested in EU affairs, with a strong desire to contribute to the work of GCE in advocating for a just and green transition in Europe.
