European Parliament Youth Dialogue

Drawing from our successful relationship with the Council of the European Union, we now wish to build a long-lasting and fruitful collaboration between the youth and the European Parliament.

WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT YOUTH DIALOGUE?

The European Parliament Youth Dialogue aims to strengthen relations between young citizens in the EU and their representatives, by giving multiple opportunities during the year to interact and discuss key policies. Young people from all over Europe will be invited to give their opinions and to participate in events with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and high-level speakers. MEPs will have the opportunity to explain the key issues at stake for each topic and how they legislate. They will also get inputs from young people before, during, and after the event.

EVENT DETAILS

  • Each event took place on Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube Livestream.
  • There was a discussion between MEPs from different political parties and GCE representatives.
  • At the end, the public had the opportunity to ask questions.
  • Following the live event, an informal (non-public) exchange between MEPs and GCE representatives took place.
  • WHY IS SUCH A DIALOGUE NECESSARY?

We truly believe that a Dialogue with the European Parliament would be very beneficial both for young people and for the relations the European Parliament is trying to build with them.

The European Parliament is the only directly elected institution at the European level and yet the youth is not directly associated with its work. As a directly elected institution it should also be mindful of young votes and the process of democratic engagement. Although the Parliament’s post 2019 elections report shows an increase in voter turnout among young people (below the age of 25), it is still the lowest turnout per age group. These numbers should prove to MEPs that not only engaging with youth is necessary, but that encouraging their vote is incredibly beneficiary. This European Parliament Youth Dialogue could serve as a powerful blueprint for consistent involvement of youth in European Parliament processes.
Furthermore, this dialogue would create a powerful platform to help youth engage with EU legislators which not only would allow more information on the works of the European Parliament to be shared with young people – emphasizing its role and how it functions- but it would also give a better youth perspective to the existing or future work of the Parliament.
Finally, this dialogue is necessary because it is now impossible to deny that young people have shown their interest in politics at a EU level and are asking for a more institutionalised dialogue platform – through climate strikes, or advocacy groups like ours. We hope you will find engaging with us as important as we believe it is to engage with you.
