Generation Climate Europe, alongside 20 other member organisations of the Just Transition Alliance signed a joint letter addressing the EU policy framework for a just transition, which was recently sent to the Ministers of Climate & Environment, Social Affairs and Economy and Finance of all EU Member States.
The letter urges the ministers to implement the EESC opinion: Advancing the EU’s just transition policy framework: what measures are necessary in view of the forthcoming Environment Council.
The EESC opinion outlines six key elements of a Just Transition Policy Framework (JTPF), each accompanied by concrete measures:
– A holistic, coordinated and integrated policy approach is at the heart of the JTPF
– The JTPF should enable a sustainable economy that provides well-being for all within planetary boundaries
– The European Social Model and member states’ welfare systems are the backbone of the JTPF
– Social dialogue, civic dialogue and the participation of local and regional authorities are the cornerstones to realise the JTPF
– Strong and resilient sustainable businesses are a prerequisite for the functioning of the JTPF
-Adequate investment in a just transition is fundamental to the realisation of the JTPF
The EESC underscores that the just transition policy should “simultaneously contribute to advancing climate action and environmental protection and restoration, to enhancing social justice and respect for fundamental human rights, and to combatting poverty, social and economic inequalities, all forms of discrimination and their intersections”. It also highlights the rights of future generations, as specified by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European.
